Jacob Zuma to get tough on violent crimes
For the first time in what to me feels like 15 years, I am liking this morning what I am hearing a President of South Africa saying.
Jacob Zuma last night said “government was in the process of overhauling the criminal justice system and boosting the number of officers in the police force in a bid to tackle crime.” He urged the courts to come down harder on criminals: “They actually stop the right of some people to live by shooting them, killing them. The next minute lawyers are there to take him out because the constitution says you have a right to be out on bail. I don’t know, to me there is a contradiction.”
I am no political analyst, but I would like to know what it would take to change the constitution of South Africa, but it is obscenely clear that something has to be done about. At least 10 shopping centres in Gauteng have been hit by armed gangs in recent days. At least two people have died, three others seriously wounded and many others slightly hurt in the attacks.
On Wednesday of this week we had an incident outside the estate that I live in. A couple of contractors that had been to the bank to draw money were followed by 5 armed men for distance of about 8 Kilometres back to the complex. On entering the complex they were attacked at gun point by these 5 men, one of which also took the estate security guard hostage. The thought is that the criminals were advised by the bank teller of the amount of money and the description of the men carrying that money. That’s how deep the syndicates in this town go right now. Thankfully Wednesdays incident ended without and lives been taken. But the question is, will the next person to draw money from that teller at that bank be so lucky?
I like what I am hearing from Jacob Zuma this morning, and as much as I was against him becoming the President of this country, I am sure that if what is saying right now gets put into practice and South Africans can start feeling safe again, allot of his past will be forgiven by allot of people. Just please don’t stop communicating on the issue. Now have told us you know that something needs to be done, I want you be as vocal when you actually start making the changes. Let’s see what happens now. I look forward in anticipation to see them take place.
